WINDSOR, CONN. — OSF Flavors has introduced the Food Needs Hierarchy, a framework designed to help food and beverage research and development teams make formulation decisions.
The framework combines consumer expectations with sensory strategy, market context and formulation priorities, the company said.
OSF Flavors organized the framework into five broad dimensions:
- Sustenance: Food to meet basic needs.
- Convenience and access: Food for modern lifestyles.
- Pleasure and experience: Food that delights.
- Health and optimization: Food as a tool for better living.
- Purpose: Food for a thriving planet.
“The framework is based on a simple observation,” said Pierre Battu, managing director, Asia, at OSF Flavors. “Food expectations do not evolve uniformly, and different consumer needs coexist within every market and every category. A value positioned powdered beverage, a mainstream RTD product, a high-protein nutritional drink, and a premium natural beverage may all succeed on the same supermarket shelf while responding to very different consumer expectations and economic realities.
“The OSF Food Needs Hierarchy provides an additional perspective for considering where a product is intended to compete and how consumer expectations, sensory design, technical requirements, and economic parameters interact within that positioning.”
