MINNEAPOLIS — General Mills Inc. is bringing more convenience to its staple Cheerios ready-to-eat cereal brand through a partnership with SC Johnson & Son Inc.’s Ziploc storage brand.
In what’s being billed as “a natural pairing for cereal lovers,” General Mills has launched Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal, which the company said marks the first resealable bag inside a traditional cereal box, making it easier to pour cereal, reseal the bag and keep the contents fresher for longer. The bag opens partially across the top to form a “pour spout” that enables consumers to fill a bowl or cup more conveniently and then quickly reseal the bag right inside the box.
Minneapolis-based General Mills said Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal is now available for both Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios exclusively at Walmart.com and is slated to roll out to retailers nationwide in the coming months.
Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal comes after years of customer feedback on the topic of cereal box storage, including hundreds of thousands of annual requests, comments and reactions, General Mills noted. The company said 90% of cereal lovers said they already go beyond closing the cereal box to help maintain freshness, such as by folding the bag, rolling it, clipping it shut or transferring the cereal to another container.
“General Mills has received letters, emails and DMs asking for an easier way to reseal a cereal box, and we decided it was time to partner with the ultimate freshness brand: Ziploc,” said Emilie Knox, vice president and business unit director for Cheerios at General Mills. “Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal takes a small, everyday cereal frustration and finally gives consumers the simple solution they’ve been asking for, making the whole routine easier and more enjoyable.”
Citing Nielsen retail sales data over approximately the past year, General Mills said Cheerios is the top-selling cereal brand. General Mills said nearly one box of Cheerios is produced every second, and Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal had to be developed to be manufactured at that scale. General Mills added that Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal is being produced exclusively in Buffalo, NY, in the same place where Cheerios was first made in 1941.
In announcing Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal, General Mills didn’t include a suggested retail price range. An internet search by Milling & Baking News found the product available via Walmart.com (in metropolitan New York) at $4.97 for an 11.2-oz box for Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal and a 14.4-oz box for Honey Nut Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal.
“For generations, Ziploc brand has helped people keep the foods they love fresh through simple, trusted solutions,” a spokesperson for SC Johnson’s Ziploc brand said. “Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal is an exciting new expression of what Ziploc brand can do — bringing our resealable freshness expertise directly into the Cheerios package and Ziploc brand into the pantry in an entirely new way.”
