SPRINGFIELD, MASS. — Smithfield Foods Inc. recently confirmed it will be closing its dry sausage facility in Springfield, Mass., with operations expected to conclude in August.
A Worker Adjustment Retraining Notification (WARN) Act notice from the MassHire Department of Career Services said 190 employees will be laid off between April 10 and Sept. 11, 2026.
“Production will be transferred to other Smithfield packaged meats facilities, which have the capacity to make these products to our same high standards of quality,” a Smithfield spokesperson told MEAT+POULTRY, a sister publication of Food Business News. “We are providing transition support and discussing options with employees at the Springfield location, including the possibility of applying for other positions with Smithfield.”
In January, Smithfield said it would purchase Nathan’s Famous Inc. for approximately $450 million.
